Match Report - Spirits vs Misfits April 16 2011

It was a rainy afternoon and the Spirits team was turning up for
the game hoping to have an early round of beers. But guess the
Rain had other plans and wanted us to work “hard” for the
“organic” drinks. A couple of “newbies” in the team.
The drop-out for the match was the skipper, Shubham, and
Martyn was appointed to do the job. Up went the coin and down
was Spirits luck, as we lost the toss and put into bat – well not a
bad decision by the opposition as long as we got to bat first, but
that meant we had to face a wet ball. The rain stopped
eventually, there was a delay in the match and we started
around 2pm. The performance is as under:
1) Graeme Gardiner
Batting : Opened the batting for Spirits and did a good job
in moving the scoreboard as the wickets tumbled at the
other end and scoring 37 – highest scorer for the team.
Bowling : Again a good job with the bowl, figures of
3/0/18/0
2) Rammy
Batting : Second of the opening pair, was struggling with
the bat and tried to stick around but was caught at 2.
Bowling : Great job with the bowl, figures of 6/1/21/2. Got
a spectacular low caught and bowled, even the batsman
took a while to realise that he was caught brilliantly before
he walked off.
3) Sivam
Batting : Tried to solidify the innings and played carefully
but didn’t last for too long and was out without scoring.
Bowling : Good with the bowl, though was hit around but
took up two wickets, figures of 6/0/38/2
4) Madhukar
Batting : Went out to stabilize the tumbling wickets.
Played some shots from the book but was out at 3
Bowling : Did not bowl. But did well in the field getting a
run-out with a direct hit and there was no need to call for
the third umpire.
5) Kalpesh
Batting : The second highest scorer getting 25 and playing
with technique. We thought that Spirits can reach a
defendable total if he could stay on for a couple of overs.
Bowling : Did not bowl
6) Akash
Batting : Tried to stay at the pitch and get some runs but
was out cheaply at a score of 4.
Bowling : Best bowler of the lot with remarkable figures
of 2/0/4/3
7) Martyn
Batting : The team expected a Captain’s innings as the
wickets were falling and what seemed to be a good batting
line up, didn’t keep up to the mark. Got out at 2 as the ball
rolled on to the stumps after hitting the bat.
Bowling : Bowled few good length deliveries but did got
hit with figures of 3/0/29/0
8) Vishal
Batting : With the spirits high being nominated as Man of
the match for previous encounter against Misfits, went in
to have a big innings. But had a deceptive flight and a
yorker delivery , heard the not so sweet sound of the ball
tumbling the wickets and got a “gold” which any batsman
would not love to get – the “golden duck”
Bowling : Did not Bowl
Saw the hard-hitting batsman going out the crease to
probably swing another one over the boundary rope at the
bowling of Sivam. But the bowl bounced of the seam and
missed the batsman and landed right below the chin. The
“keeper” was down bleeding with a cut and got “rest”
from the match
9) Saravana
Batting : Came out to bat with responsibility of getting
some more runs on the board hitting some boundaries but
was out for 13
Bowling : Did not bowl
10) Lorraine
Batting : Stayed the longest after Graeme and scored 5
runs.
Bowling : Didn’t get to finish her second over and
figures of 1.4/0/9/0
11) Bill
Batting : The youngest member of the team , played
some decent shots and was the not out batsman.
Bowling : Did not bowl.
Spirits managed to put 120 runs on the board, which was
definitely not a defendable total and went in to bowl with a
killing streak. Did pick up wickets at regular intervals with
some nice work in the field and few good deliveries, though
the Misfits batsman were scoring at a comfortable rate. The
match came to the last wicket pair for the Misfits but they
managed to win the match.
No rain in the latter half which also helped the Misfits as the
ball was coming on to the bat easily, and not like a wet lump
as experienced by Spirits.
Overall still a great game of cricket played in the right
“spirit” with the beer rolling and having fun.
Result : Misfits won by 1 wicket
