The 2011 games between the Spirits and Misfits were as follows
- Misfits won the first game by 1 wicket,
- Misfits only had 9 players and our captain “not to be named’ gave John Sist (58 and 2/12) to the Misfits and they won by 3 runs.
- In the third game Spirits made 200 and Misfits could only make 91.
Should have / could have been 3 victories for the Spirits over Misfits but it 1-2 for the year.
The Misfits team list was leaked out to us on Wednesday night by the Misfits 14th Man Andy Covel. They had put together a strong side to keep the title in their hands and with Spirits only having a handful of players by Wednesday we were in trouble. Andy knowing he wasn’t getting a game with Misfits put his name down for the Spirits and so did first timer “Afrikaans” Sean Brown.
John was captain and was there a little earlier this week and to my surprise we had 11 before the Misfits had 6. They suggested they should bat first, and with their reported batting strength, I agreed. Raj opened the bowling to Moose who must have watched the Aus v RSA test match and played out a maiden in the first over (apparently a $20 fine for the Misfits). Ankit opened at the other end and bowled a few wides before one slipped out of his hand and he bowled Pete for a duck ($50 Misfit fine). Ankit was a little inconsistent with 7 wides, and others not called, but finished with 2/24 off 4. Raj at the other end bowled through to get 2/12 off 6 overs in a masterly display of outswing bowling. He also bowled 3 maidens so Misfits fines were adding up. Graham Gardiner also got a wicket in his first spell and Misfits were 5/46 off 12 overs. Anul came in to bat for Misfits but clearly his batting ability was on par with Yiqi, perfect opportunity to bring on Andy Covell and first timer Sean Brown to bowl. Rule 33 was also invoked; the idea is not to get out Anul if possible, even dropped catches under Rule 33 would not be fined! Ollie was batting with Anul and the runs dried up with nice inswing from Sean (6 overs 0-21) and tight bowling from Andy (1-14 off 5 overs, including a missed stumping by the keeper) only 35 runs were scored off the next 11 overs. Misfits were only 81 runs off 23 overs. Sean had done very well considering it was his first game in 12 years, only got home at 6am, and wasn’t sure what happened the night before. All he said was that he had $1,000 at the start of the night and only $60 at the end of the night, he may have contributed to the Russian economy on Friday by drinking lots of Vodka.. Misfits, in panic at this stage, retired Ollie for 19 and Sean unfortunately caught Anul for 4, so Hammer was sent in to bat. Akash came on for 2 overs of slow medium and went for 21 and our 12th man Paul Mclean, who was snapped up by the Misfits as they were one short, made more runs for the Misfits (11) than he had made for us all year. A few run outs by John getting lazy runners at the bowling end capped a good fielding effort by the Sprits. It started raining in the last over when Rajesh was bowling and didn’t help his figures with 0/22 off 2 overs, including 6 off the last ball. Graeme was at the other end with and finished with 1/30 off 5 overs. We bowled 21 wides and there could have been more if the umpires were strict! Misfits finished with 150 off 30 overs a more than achievable score but they rain was heavy and persistent so the game was called off pretty quickly. With the amount of ducks, slow batting and maiden overs the Misfits fines were substantial so it lead to many beers and Jacks after the game, finishing sometime after 10pm.
A number of players didn’t get to do too much, Chiro, Mike and Noble but Man of the Match was Rajmohan with 2/12 off 6 and 3 maidens. As far as the worst player for the game it would be between the worst bowling figures of Akash 0/21 off 2 and Rajesh 0/22 off 2. After considering Rajesh bowled the last over in heavy rain and the fielding of Akash was slightly below Spirits normal low standards, Akash won by a whisker.
